Quarky Corn

I was out grabbing a few ears of corn and found an ear with a strange growth on it. It had a spongy exterior that looked like styrofoam. The interior looked like dirt and roots. I'm not sure if it is some sort of fungus or a nest for a pest. Anyone know what it is?

  1. Perhaps I've solved the mystery. Common smut??? Turns out that this is a pricey treat in Mexico. Who would have guessed?

  3. Gross. At least it didn't smell funny. It looked like it should. :) People eat all sorts of strange things. My tastes are WAY less sophisticated.

  4. I think it might be huitlacoche. I saw them use it on Iron Chef once. I just looked it up and it's call corn smut also so I guess the others are right. I'm pretty adventurous, but I don't think I would eat it.

  5. If it was on Iron Chef then I certainly won't eat it. :) They cook with some disgusting stuff. It must have been a REALLY hungry man that decided he would bite into that.
